In 2017, Team Appreciate recognized an area for improvement in our STEMConnect model: though students were able to learn about robotics during the session, they were unable to continue their learning after the week had ended. This was particularly a problem for students of economically-disadvantaged families.

To resolve this, we developed RoBox, an affordable robotics kit designed to inspire passion for STEM. Our team members spent over 3,000 hours designing the robot, developing software programs and interfaces, manufacturing the kits, and writing curricula for their use. The main goal when designing the kit was to make it as accessible and cost efficient as possible. Currently, a RoBox kit costs $40, but we are constantly working to reduce the cost.

RoBox was first used in a 2017 STEMConnect session. In collaboration with our sponsors EISD, Qualcomm, and NXP, 56 kids had the opportunity to learn about robotics and continue their learning at home. In 2019, we began working with ClubZ, an after-school program for economically underserved families, and introduced RoBox to 30 more children.
