Rex Ryan is an infant who was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer on September 12, 2013, at the age of 18 months. Since then, he has had several major surgeries, 7 full rounds of chemotherapy, an autologous stem cell transplant at Houston’s Texas Children’s Hospital, over 30 blood product transfusions, and has spent most of his days as an in-patient at Dell Children’s Hospital. His story has been inspirational to our team, which is why we dedicated our 2014 FRC season to him, naming our robot #RexStrong.
After spring break our students volunteered at Run with Rex, a fundraising marathon in his honor where our students handed out water and demonstrated our 2014 FRC robot. Rex got to meet #RexStrong, an inspirational image that will remain in the memories of those who attended.
We returned to this event in 2015. Rex greeted us with a smile and had a great time chasing our robot and balls around the park.
UPDATE: We’re happy to report that Rex is now in full remission! We look forward to attending the Run for Rex again in 2016 and appreciate its efforts to raise funds for cancer research.
